How to avoid choice overwhelm
I once had a client with a very sure idea of what she wanted. It was in the bag. And then she saw some of my display cakes. Suddenly she was overwhelmed by the choice of colour, textures and techniques. She wanted all of them. My mistake was indulging this slightly, which led to the longest consultation I have ever done. Choice overwhelm is a real thing people.
Eventually we had to start from scratch and the conversation we ultimately had, can be used to narrow down your options when it comes to choosing your cake. Here are my top tips.
Seasonal weddings.
The season will guide your colour palette, and if you are wanting flowers on your cake, the types of bloom. Whether you are opting for real flowers or handmade, the premise is the same. Autumn weddings lend themselves well to earthy tones and deeper, richer colours, whilst spring weddings suit lighter pastels, bold splashes of colour and airy, whimsical textures.
The time of year will also impact upon the finish of your cake and this is really important because the temperature will effect the ingredients. I have never felt more stressed than the time I delivered a buttercream cake to a marquee during a heatwave!
Look to your venue for inspiration.
A wedding cake should feel like it belongs in the space where it's being served. If you're celebrating in a rustic barn, marquee, or garden venue, a semi-naked cake decorated with seasonal blooms can look effortlessly at home. For weddings in luxury hotels or contemporary venues, a modern cake with sharp edges, smooth icing, and elegant floral details can make a stunning statement. Matching your cake to your surroundings is one of the easiest ways to create a beautifully coordinated wedding aesthetic.
The colour scheme.
Often couples have a colour palette in mind and this alone can determine the look of a cake. An elegant monochrome wedding may not need a fussy cake with stencilling and ruffles.
The budget.
Your budget will heavily impact upon the size and level of detailing your cake has, and this is an important aspect when considering your cake. But don't forget that less can often be more, particularly in terms of style. There is nothing more pleasing to the eye than a sharp smooth cake with perfect edges, and a beautifully executed simple design can be every bit as striking as an elaborate masterpiece. Clean lines, elegant proportions and carefully chosen details often create a timeless look that will never go out of fashion. By focusing on quality craftsmanship rather than excessive decoration, you can achieve a sophisticated and memorable cake that complements your wedding perfectly while staying within budget.
The purpose of the cake.
Before choosing colours, flavours, or design details, it's worth considering what role you want your wedding cake to play on the day. Are you looking for a show-stopping centrepiece that creates a real wow factor and becomes a talking point among your guests? For some couples, the cake is almost a form of entertainment in itself, with dramatic designs, intricate sugar work, or impressive floral installations making it a key feature of the reception.
For others, the cake is more about tradition and practicality. It marks the ceremonial cake cutting, provides a delicious dessert for guests, and complements the overall wedding style without demanding too much attention.
Understanding what you want your cake to deliver will help shape your decisions on everything from size and design to budget. If the cake is intended to be a focal point, you may choose a larger, more elaborate design. If it's simply serving as a dessert and honouring tradition, a simpler cake can be just as beautiful and meaningful.
There is so much choice available and it is so easy to get distracted by the myriad of beautiful creations online. By tailoring your options to your specific wedding, you can have a stunning cake that is truly bespoke to you.
